Is Your Store Ready for ChatGPT Shopping? Agentic Commerce Checklist (2026)

AI shopping agents are starting to buy things for people. Someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode or Perplexity to find running shoes under $120, and the assistant compares products, picks one and, more and more often, completes the checkout itself.

If your store isn't readable by these agents, you're not in the comparison. This checklist covers what agents need, how the new checkout protocols work, and how to test your store in a minute.

How AI shopping agents find and buy products

  1. Discovery. The agent searches the web and its own shopping index. Its bots (such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot) need to be able to read your product pages.
  2. Understanding. The agent reads your product data: name, price, currency, stock, identifiers like GTIN, ratings, shipping and returns. Structured data makes this reliable.
  3. Checkout. Increasingly, the agent buys inside the chat using an agent checkout protocol, instead of sending the shopper to your site.

The two checkout protocols

  • ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol): built by OpenAI and Stripe. It powers checkout inside ChatGPT. Payment runs on Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens, so the agent never sees the shopper's card. Merchants apply through OpenAI's merchant program and submit a product feed. If you already use Stripe or a supported platform, you're most of the way there.
  • UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol): led by Google for AI Mode and Gemini, and supported by Shopify. A store publishes a profile at /.well-known/ucp describing its checkout services and payment handlers. Shopify merchants can turn it on from the admin, and Google Merchant Center has UCP settings.

You don't have to pick one. Many stores support both.

The readiness checklist

1. Let shopping bots in

  • Check robots.txt doesn't block OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-User or Googlebot on product and collection pages.
  • Check your firewall and CDN too. Bot protection that shows "verify you are human" pages blocks AI agents the same way it blocks scrapers. Allow verified bots (for example with Cloudflare's verified-bots rules).

2. Complete your product structured data

Add schema.org Product JSON-LD to every product page with:

  • name, description, image, brand
  • offers with price, priceCurrency and availability
  • identifiers: sku and gtin (or mpn)
  • aggregateRating if you have reviews
  • hasMerchantReturnPolicy and shippingDetails

Agents compare products on exact identifiers, price, stock and delivery. Missing fields make your products less likely to be picked.

3. Make policies easy to find

Link your return, shipping, terms and privacy pages from every page. Agents and payment networks check them before completing a purchase.

4. Make the catalog discoverable

List products in a product sitemap and reference it in robots.txt. A clean product feed (the same one you'd send to Google Merchant Center) is what ACP onboarding asks for.

5. Turn on agent checkout

  • ChatGPT (ACP): apply through OpenAI's merchant program and connect Stripe.
  • Google AI Mode (UCP): enable it in Shopify or Google Merchant Center so your /.well-known/ucp profile is published.

Test your store in a minute

Stormap's free agentic_commerce_readiness tool checks all of the above from your store's public pages and returns a 0–100 score, a readiness level and a prioritized fix list. It checks:

  • bot access
  • bot-protection walls
  • product structured data
  • policies
  • product sitemap or feed
  • your platform and Stripe
  • UCP, ACP and MCP discovery files

Connect it to Claude Code with:

claude mcp add --transport http stormap https://stormap.ai/mcp

Then ask: "Is mystore.com ready for ChatGPT shopping? List the fixes in priority order." In Claude (web or desktop), add https://stormap.ai/mcp as a custom connector. Other apps are covered on the developers page.

Common results from testing real stores:

  • Many stores have good product data but no return policy or shipping details in structured data.
  • Some have no GTINs.
  • A few block AI agents entirely with bot protection without realizing it.
